ISD - The International School of Dakar


Dr. Alan Knobloch- Director

Alan Knobloch is the Director at ISD. Prior to Dakar, he was the Deputy Superintendent of the Shanghai American School (Puxi Campus) in China, where he served for three years. He was also the High School Principal there for four years.

Dr. Knobloch has served as a Middle School Principal at the American International School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and at the North Broward Preparatory School in Florida. He has also taught at several schools in the United States, as well as at the Singapore American School and at the American School of Niamey in Niger, where he started his international teaching career. He received his B.S. in Special Education from Boston University, his M.Ed. Administration/Supervision from Plymouth State University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Argosy University. Dr. Knobloch is married to Eileen Knobloch and they have two children who attend ISD.

Kelly Chumrau - ES Principal

Kelly Chumrau is the Elementary School Principal at ISD. Prior to working at ISD, she was the Principal of Paxson Elementary in Missoula, Montana. Kelly is in her 26th year as an educator. She initially started as a classroom teacher in Missoula and eventually she and her husband worked in international schools in the Philippines, Germany, and El Salvador. She is married to Brad Chumrau who is an elementary teacher at ISD. Kelly and Brad have one daughter who attends university and is studying education. Kelly holds an M.A. in Curriculum & Instruction, a Reading Endorsement, and a License in Administration from the University of Montana.

Lorne Birdl - MSHS Principal

Lorne Bird is the Secondary School principal at ISD.  Following a degree in Economics from the University of Victoria, he received a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.  After teaching in South Korea for two years he worked at Colegio International de Caracas teaching IB DP Economics, IB Theory of Knowledge, and IB MYP English and Humanities classes across the Secondary School.  

Prior to coming to ISD he worked at the American International School of Bucharest where he was the IB MYP Coordinator, the Secondary School Deputy Principal, and the High School Principal.  Throughout his time at AISB he taught IB ToK, was an examiner for the IB in Economics, ToK, and the Personal Project.  While at AISB he earned an MA in Educational Leadership from the University of Bath, and he is currently finalizing his his doctoral dissertation in Educational Leadership, also through the University of Bath.  Mr. Bird is here with his daughter, Narcisa, who is currently in the Middle School at ISD.

John Wishart - Director of Technology, Secondary Assistant Principal

John began his career in education in 1987 as an Technology, Math and Science teacher. John received a M.Ed. in International Administration from Trenton State College;​ in 2016-17 he has assumed administrative oversight of students and staff in the middle school. He has been a Technology Director for a large school district in Shanghai, for ISKenya and as a Technology Specialist in Jakarta. John ​earned a B.SC. in Computer Engineering from Auckland University, NZ; a Dip. Tchg; and numerous technology certifications including CCNE-I, MSCE, NCE, A+, Web.

Eric Rodne - Director of Athletics & Activities

Eric is in his 22nd year in education. He began teaching middle school social studies and coaching high school football and softball in Arizona. Later he became an athletic director and assistant principal. The last seven years, he has been the activities director in Minnesota. The International School of Dakar is Eric and his families first overseas post. He is joined here with his wife Jody and three children Tate, Jack, and Ty. Eric has BS degree from St. Cloud State University and a Masters Degree in Education and Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.

Barbara Fultz - Curriculum Coordinator

Barbara has worked in education for over 30 years. She has experience educating all levels of learners, elementary though university level. Barbara’s career in education began in the state of Maine and continued in California, Ohio and Florida.
Barbara began her International School career in 1995 at the International School of Jakarta where she met her partner John Wishart. Barbara has taught all levels of mathematics, including all levels of IB. She has served on several curriculum committees over the years, and is delighted to be coordinating curriculum at ISD.  Barbara has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and an Administration certification from the University of South Florida.
