LIBRARY CLASSES

All pre-kindergarten through grade 5 students are scheduled for library visits once in a six-day rotation. "The purpose of a school library is to provide a wide range of books and multimedia resources to support teaching and learning throughout the key stages, and foster a reading and information culture that promotes independent motivated readers and learners for life." (School Library Association.)

ELEMENTARY LIBRARY COLLECTION

Our collection includes books in English, French, and Spanish. Magazines/periodicals in English and French are available for all ages. Kindles with a set collection of books are available for students in grades 2-5 with parental permission. The elementary library collection is divided into the following sections for easy access:
J F Junior fiction for grades 3-8
CB Chapter books for grades 1 & 2
ER Easy readers for emerging readers
E Picture books for all ages
G Graphic novels and graphic non-fiction
E Non-fiction informational books
BB board books for infants and toddlers
FR French books
SP Spanish books

Books, magazines, DVDs, and Kindles are checked out for a period of two weeks and may be renewed. Students are asked to return or renew their books on the day their library class meets.

OVERDUE/LOST BOOKS

A flat fee replacement charge will be made for lost or damaged books. All patrons (students, parents and teachers) are responsible for the materials checked out in their name. Students with lost or overdue materials will receive their report cards when all materials are returned or replacement charges are paid. Overdue notices are sent on a regular basis as a courtesy reminder.

RESPONSIBILITY OF USERS

Our goal is to provide a warm and welcoming environment that encourages reading, learning and thinking. Students are asked to act responsibly in the library and to use library materials respectfully. No student may infringe upon the rights of others. Kindly leave food and drink outside the library door (closed water bottles are allowed).

COMPUTERS

Library computers are available for accessing the online library catalog, databases, word processing programs, email, and for Internet research. Recreational use of computers, such as playing online games and streaming are permitted before and after the school hours of 8:30 am - 3:20 pm. See Technology User Rules, section 5.27.1 of International School of Dakar Parent-Student Handbook found on the main ISD web page

We own a growing collection of books on parenting topics, and magazines of interest to parents. We have a collection of board books for those families with toddlers. The library collection includes adult-level fiction and non-fiction. Parents are invited to the library for reading, browsing, and borrowing.
